ADJUSTED POWER DEVELOPMENT PLAN VIII

On April 15, 2025, the Prime Minister of Vietnam issued Decision No. 768/QĐ-TTg, officially approving the Adjusted National Power Development Plan for 2021–2030, with a vision extending to 2050 (Adjusted PDP VIII). This decision supersedes the original PDP VIII, approved in 2023 under Decision No. 500/QĐ-TTg.

The Adjusted PDP VIII reaffirms Vietnam’s commitment to a strategic energy policy that supports the transition to net-zero emissions by 2050, in line with commitments made at COP26–29 and under the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP). The revised plan incorporates updated assumptions regarding demand growth, energy technology deployment, and financing capacity, leading to significant structural shifts in the national power mix for both the 2030 and 2050 milestones.

Key developments in the Adjusted PDP VIII include a substantial reallocation of power generation capacity, emphasizing the enhanced deployment of renewables, the reintroduction of nuclear power, and the integration of energy storage technologies. A summary of these key developments is outlined in our legal update.
